From line6 to Amplitube to Zoom...

Post by 12bar »

I've posted already about my sound problems after the recent Win10 updates. I've quit with line6 and podfarm because I couldn't get it to work.
I tried some programs that are free or came with my Roland Duo Capture: Guitar Rig and Amplitube. I stayed with the later and got it running with Audacity and Reaper. But when starting to record, problems came back, I couldn't choose ASIO for the interface and WASAPI or Directsound was too slow.

Luckily today on my birthday I got a Zoom "G1on" pedal from my son. A small thing, ideal for desktop use. I was a bit biased against it because I tried a Zoom some years ago. But this thing is great. The presets are bad as always, but I could quickly set up a Fender Twin Reverb plus some hall and record over my Roland card.
At first I got a strange noise but quickly found out that it came from the USB cable which can be used instead of the batteries (unfortunately no software control or recording via usb, it has no integrated sound card).
A short example is attached (not focused on playing  ), effects chain is Noise Gate - Twin Reverb - Hall.

Later I found out a possible source for the Win10 problems: the ASIO entries in the Registry. Often there are old entries which cause problems. To delete, do the following:

- Open the Windows registry (Start -> run -> regedit)
- Open the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> ASIO
- Delete the unnecessary audio card entries you do not want or need by right-clicking the entry and choosing delete. Don't delete working audio cards!

That sounds good to me! Well done your son for getting you connected to Win10 again.

Getting ASIO to behave itself is key isn't it - shame there's so much old rubbish builds up on computers, especially when it causes problems like this.

I'll bet half of the Registry entries are either outdated or never used!

AhAh!, Don't know if you finally got satisfied with all those settings, but I do really appreciate how delicate is your playing Gerd
Sparkling claptonian use of the Pent (18~25) spicing kind a mellow BB's sound you pull out your Epi,

Thanks Fenson! :shy:

I like the Fender Twin sim most, although it's not completely tweaked.
I wish the USB connection could be used to control and store the settings, the LCD and the knobs are a bit small

Claptonian pentatonic is all I can - he made me want to play guitar
There are some breathtaking versions of EC playing Double Trouble on Youtube, worth a look, for example

A fine example of bluesy playing and sound from you in that newer clip there!

Small LCD and knobs seem to be the order of the day currently- everything as small as it can be but packed with features and multi menus!

Good news - I found a freeware which can control the Zoom G1on:
https://tonelib.net/
It works with other Zoom devices, too.
So the G1on is cheap, sounds great and is easy to control

Well found - that will make things better!

Cheap with great sound and easy to control ticks a lot of major boxes!
After all your troubles with devices and computer recording it's time you got a break.

Look forward to hearing some more samples in the future. :D

 There's a good fullness to the clean sounds you're getting with the Zoom!

It must be a relief to no longer be frustrated by all those Win10 / Line 6 problems.
