Greatest guitar solo....ever

Post by deltabluesrookie »

Name the greatest guitar solo YOU heard and still makes you stop and listen to it every time. :music2:

I know this is a Ec forum.....but for me it's comfortably numb.

For a blues solo with some flash, this is a contender for me:

(Jeff Beck)

Of course there are others that stop me in my tracks, like some Django Reinhardt solos. and BB King solos.

When I saw SRV in OKC in the mid '80's doing "Life Without You". That plus any number of solos from any number of guitarists. That is just the first one that popped into my head.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird gets me every time, never would have guessed from my name would you! It's my favourite song of all time.
Gary Moore - I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know
SRV - Little Wing
Molly Hatchet - Boogie No More
Luther Allison - Watching You (Cherry Red Wine)
Buckethead - Soothsayer
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Peter Green - Love That Burns
B.B. King - All Over Again (Live On Ralph Gleeson)
Ted Nugent - Hibernation
Just a few that jump into my head for starters, a few different genre's there but all ultimate solo's.
"You Only Live But Once, When Your Dead Your Done...So Let The Good Times Roll" - B.B. King
"I'm So Lonesome I Don't Even Have Me No Friend, I've Done So Much Crying Will I Ever Laugh Again" - Peter Green

Ok, there's waaaay too many, so I just want to point out a couple of great solos from a couple of the newer guys.

Joe Bonamassa - Blues Deluxe
John Mayer - Gravity (the live version on Where the Light Is).

These are the two that have blown me away recently.

Another good one from EC

HVvUQqDVWi4
Still more Eric

Yes, all rock stuff, but I'll post some blues later.

Also, could someone post how to embed the videos? I cannot for the life of me figure this out. Thanks.

Predictably if I had to choose one solo it would be Peter Green. "No - surely not Viking - that's not like you" I hear you all cry!

So - if I have to choose one I'll maybe go with the Boston Tea Party live "Jumping at Shadows". Not just for the soloing, but also the fills. I'll just call the first minute or so an introduction rather than a solo. The guitar on the solo from 2:38 to 3:55 has, for me, such gut-wrenching emotion to it, I have to choose it. What fantastic musical note choice and structure too, and the phrasing is as near perfection as I've ever heard.

That's if it's a blues solo. If going outside the blues I'd be hard pressed depending on my mood to decide between "Jumping at Shadows" and "Brothers in Arms". I know it was very unfashionable to admit to liking Dire Straits, but I often seem to be out of step with public opinion! :shy: Another case of a guitar played with intense feeling and every note counting for something. It's like two people taking turns to sing in the verses. It's certainly a song that I can find too much if I'm feeling low. :tears:

But what a wonderful wealth of great guitar playing we already have on this thread - such a large number of exceptional guitar players for us to feel inferior to.

Come on guys, lets try and keep this thread to two maybe three solos at the max.

Mark is one of the greatest guitarists ever, just as Dire Straits is one of the best bands ever. I'll strike at anyone who says otherwise with a large hammer (but it will be difficult to actually hit them because I won't be leaving my apartment :away: ).

Yeah, I remember the first time I heard Sultans of Swing (all those years ago). One of the best songs amid all that pop that was constantly being played on the radio.

Jimi Hendrix playing All Along The Watchtower was the guitar soloing that made me want to learn guitar.

Special mention goes to Neil Young - Down By The River.

Lots of great ones already posted. I especially liked the Funkadelic clip. Never paid much attention to that band before. I'll have to check out more by them. Who is the guitar player?

Peter Green certainly has his share of great recorded solos, as does EC and Jeff Beck. I'd be hard pressed to choose anyone as the "greatest". But, just for arguments sake...Jeff Beck's "Cause We've Ended as Lovers".

This is a tough one, I really like either Buddy Guy or Clapton's solos on Five Long Years.

Viking, I really like Brother in Arms, too.

This was a great post idea!
Let me tell you what the blues is....
