Using what is to hand...

Post by Blindboy »

Some musician friends blew into town from Maine (we don't get to see them very often any more  ) and a picking party ensued. Much fun was had by all.
We were jamming on a blues in G, which was a perfect candidate for some standard tuning slide, but I was on a borrowed guitar with no bottleneck. Thinking fast, I grabbed a saltshaker from the table, and made do. Later, people were calling it the "saltshaker blues".

Good thinking - a nice idea.

Syd Barrett (RIP) used to use a cigarette lighter for a slide and got some great sounds out of it, so .... what did you reckon to the tone it gave you Bb?

Glad you grabbed that shaker right side up BB.... it could have really spiced things up. Cool look there.

I have used a micstand (difficult!!), a lighter, a beer bottle, and now, a saltshaker. The saltshaker is easier that the micstand and the beer bottle. Have y'all seen this?

Durn!! Gonna have to get Gerd to fix it. :wall:
Anyhoo... This is the beer bottle slide I aspire to...

Good quick thinkin', Blindboy! I was at my grandparent's house last Thanksgiving, and there is a really old acoustic under a couch in one of the rooms. The action is so high on it through the warped neck that you can't really even push the strings down, one of the tuners is missing so everything has to be tuned to that one note... in general, it's not a well playing axe! But, basing it on that one note (the A string, I think) I tuned it into my best approximation of open D and went at it with the handle of a coffee mug- I bet nobody had heard "Statesboro Blues" that way before! It's always fun using stuff around you in a new and fun way :D . Other things I've found to work for slides are harmonicas, socket wrench thingies, and whammy bars!

That's also cool you have some friends in Maine! There are very few people to play with in my area, maybe I just need to look a little harder.
