ES means Electric-Spanish...

Post by 12bar »

So I noodled around with some spanish-sounding notes on my Sheraton (ES-335's sister) with it's Spanish heritage
Not too serious, I'm not a flamenco/classical guitar player.

You managed some rather nylon classical sounds with some of those notes!

Nicely played anyway and I enjoyed the listen.

Thanks!
It's easier to play it on a nylon, but I can't record it...

Next one will be a Blues - back to the roots! :bb:

So as to keep Spanish all in one thread, I did have a go earlier this year at trying to get back into flamenco / Spanish guitar.

I have a small size La Mancha Rubi classical guitar (cedar top), with a short scale that is kinder to my finger joints.

I quite liked the way this one ended up, but I'm afraid I ran of steam very quickly and haven't played at the genre for a good few months.

Recorded onto a Zoom H4n Portable Recorder. A nice piece of value for money gear for acoustic recordings. :D

 That sounds great, more Spannish and reminds me that I don't have a real classical guitar - GAS attack!

You master it very well, is it a composed piece or improvised?

I don't know enough about the style. So not improvised, it's a piece out of an "Introduction to Flamenco Guitar" book.

The La Mancha Rubi I have is just 530mm scale length - called "Half Size" - nearly 20% shorter than the standard.
The fretboard / nut is slightly narrow than standard at 48mm.
With a body size about 15-20% smaller for the various dimensions it's a very comfortable guitar to play.
With a full size classical guitar the combination of long scale, wide fretboard and a flat fretboard makes it an unpleasant experience for my left hand finger joints. It was playign a full sized classical guitar a lot that first triggered the joint pains.
The little La Mancha doesn't sound half bad as well.

£170 when I bought it, now £210 - and great value for money.
La Mancha are a German business by the way.

We do have two 3/4 size nylon strings in our home, for the kids. But they are cheap ones, playable only on the first 5 frets.
Yours sounds much better.

Thanks! :D
My old Suzuki Classical was a bit lacking in quality. Not bad, wormanlike, but not much pleasure to be had from playing it.

La Mancha seem to apply quality to even their cheaper guitars.
I noticed 18 LaMancha school guitars were given the title "Recommended Model 2017/2018" by the European Guitar Teachers Association.

A mixture of German development, Spanish design and Asian manufacturing that seems to work well.

As this thread has the "Spanish" theme ....

Play in even a tuning like Csus2 and if it's minor scale then eventually there's a stopover in Spanish territory.
This little routine fell under the fingers today for some reason.

Very nice Spanish sounds in this thread. I don't play it, but my father was a very accomplished flaminco/classical player. This thread brings back fond memories. :D

Thanks Tytl. :D

It's a shame that classical guitars are so tough on the left hand - flat wide fretboard and some horrendous stretches for notes. Off limits now.

Good memories are worth holding onto BB - I have memories of my father and classical music, but piano rather then guitar. I think it did create an interest in me for playing an instrument, and it made great listening too.
