Y'all gotta hear this!

Post by Blindboy »

We were playing our regular Monday night jam at the local bar, when this young feller came up to the stage and asked if his girlfriend could sing a song. We said "Sure" and up she came. She was dressed for a day in the mountains in cutoff shorts and a tank top t-shirt. She asked if we knew "Stormy Monday" and we said that we did... She wanted to do it in Bflat, which was a complication, since we do it in G, but we sorted that out. Then she started singing... :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

You can tell that we weren't used to playing this in this key, and we didn't hit all the ending song cues quite right, but still... Wow!
Not bad for never backing her up.
Turns out she is a pro jazz and R and B singer from Albuquerque.

Must say that turned out really well.

Did I get the impression you guys were slightly wary at first and then when the singing started and you realised what you had found you sort of stepped up a gear a bit? I could kind of picture the smiles suddenly appearing. Whatever it was it all worked very well for a first play together.

Incredible! Although it may not be my favorite voice, the jazzy singing seemed to inspire the band a lot. Fantastic playing, I didn't hear that it wasn't your usual key.
Great one!

Amazing ... jazz or blues ... or somewhere in between ... who cares!!! The 'band feeling it's way' buildup adds to the overall charm. Particularly knocked out by BB picking at 4:25+ and the scat vocal at 7:25+. It's all class stuff ... hope you guys got her 'phone number then we maybe get more sometime. Terrific!!!

Losaavedra, I think the drummer got her number, but it seems like some of the numbers are missing. All he said was 38-22-36. :icon_whoknows:  :D

Thanks fellers, sorry to post yet another version of Stormy Monday, but this one is a tad different.
Yeah, VB, we were a bit subdued at first, mostly because we aren't used to playing it in Bflat. We were also trying to showcase the singer (once we heard her) and not detract from her.
Losaavedra, the scat vocal was a result of all of us listening to her sing and missing the ending cues. we had to go around a couple of more times before we got it together to end the song.
And yes, she was quite attractive.

Surprises surprises :) Still sounds pretty darn well.
Better than I would do, since I've never played that song.
