Champ sound 2. JJ tube

Post by HalfBlindLefty »

Ok, I have pulled the Mullard EEC83 to try a JJ 12ax7.
I like this even more then the Mullard's voicing.

Still channel one, still the 12" kitty's speaker. The tremelo is from a Danelectro Coolcat, reverb from the Champ itself
two tracks:
1 rhythm doubled and slightly shifted, First lady neck pickup.
1 lead... well... yeah. First lady neck/middle pickups.

See what you thing about the sound change :)

Very nice, I really like the tone you get!
Fenderish clean with a hint of breakup, it sounds great!
I guess the 12" speaker helps a lot too ;-)

I'm not surprised you like these sounds - very good indeed.

Beatifully clear, shimmering, and you can hear the muisc breathing.

You mentioned on your Champ Sound 1 thread that only 2 or 3 voicings come near to what you want - that sounds not too unexpected to me. It's probably an indication of how good Cybie is at a wide range of sounds. I would say on the VibroChamp XD that well over a half of the voicings are just not for me - however as the amp it replaced only had one voicing anything of 2 or above was a plus.
An improv a day keeps the demons at bay!

Thanks Chris and VB, yes this is a great little amp and it does have that oompf a tube amp has.
I'm in the process of a quick cab build after all :)

Still some woodwork to to like rounding the edges, saw the speaker opening and sanding sanding sanding.... and I'm not a woodworker by a long shot :D

Lucky me, building a cabinet can be done sitting down. The front and back panels came in at exactly the size I need and the top, bottom and side panels needed only one cut :). Apart from diriiling a couple of holes and applying some glue this forst part of the build was a breeze.
I fitted the speaker in it's place and the Bitmo attenuator I still have wint into a rear panel.

The somewhat more labour intensive jobs, like sanding, rounding the edges and painting will have to wait until I'm back at my usual strenght ( nah, you don't wanna know, I'm fine now)

Then it was time for a little testing and wow.. that little 1*12 cabinet sounds so sweet
