Independence Day gig in the village
My friend Becca (some of you are familiar with Becca ) asked me to do a two hour show with her on the patio of an eatery down in the village on the fourth. I immediatly accepted, and we even got in a practice or two. Of course, she played a bunch of stuff that we DIDN'T practice...
Anyway, it went well, even if much of what she does is outside of my comfort zone (I am not very good with the major scales ). A friend even got a video of one tune. This is a cover of a Reverend Gary Davis tune that we put our own stamp on. Not the best I have ever played it, but not bad, and her singing is quite good.

Playing for a lunch crowd is way different from playing for a bar crowd. It took a while to sort out how dynamic to get. Our first set was a bit tenative as a result.
Oh yeah, Becca is playing my Ibanez Artcore through my old Super Reverb, and I am playing my Casino through my Prosonic. It was her first gig playing an electric, and I think it was my first gig where I didn't use a pick at all.

No problem, the magic link corrector works again...Blindboy wrote:I can't get the Youtube dealy to work and I have to go to work.
(Maybe I have to fix the script to accept complete URL's instead of the ID?)
Fantastic performance! Sweet tone, tasty chords and licks, great voice - there's no "out of comfort zone" to hear.
Glad you enjoyed playing fingerstyle, I never use a pick at all!

Thanks Gerd.

Really good music, Blindboy. You just need the Reverend's cigar and holder.
You and Becca make a good musical team. She still reminds me a little of Crystal Bowersox.
I only have one question.
What will you sell your hat for? I want a hat like that!

Most enjoyable watching this. Really excellent music from the two of you and another insight into a wonderful musical community.
Becca sings great and there's no signs that one of you is playing electric at a gig for the first time and that one of you is on unfamiliar scales and unusually pickless.
Playing with no pick can be quite helpful to your playing if your nails can take the strain - I always used a pick till about a year ago - it was my better half encouraged me to try playing without the pick. I play much more fluently and get better tone without the pick.
Look forward to the next time Bb.

Very nice indeed. I turned down a job at NMSU in Las Cruces in the mid '90s. I think perhaps I would have taken it if I had known how rich the music scene was going to be in the area (well, up in the hills anyway).
Glad to see the number of pick-free players once more boosted. Playing with a pick is like playing with one finger. Only useful really if you have no nails left at all - when I used to do gigs I would take one along for emergencies just in case, but half the time I used to hit the wrong string with it anyway.
Keep these treats coming, BB.

What a great clip Bb !! thanks
Lovely song and what a life you are "forced" to live over there !!! ......Sitting on yer amp and playing for your supper on the back porch.. In the open air .........there are some glimpses of the lovely countryside behind you .......it looks ... and sounds ..........idyllic!!
Bearing in mind there's not a huge amount of rehearsal gone into this...... .you are playing real well together ..and you are puting in some really cool licks and some lovely bends.
The lady , as you say , sings well .and seemed pretty darned comfy with your geetar !!
Really enjoyed it ....................just wish I could have been there !!

Thanks for all the kind words, fellers. Stay tuned, we will be doing it again in a couple of weeks.
VB and HoochieCoochieMan, I have been using a kind of hybrid, pick and fingers technique for years, and have always played acoustic with my fingers, but the last year or so, I have been playing the electric with just fingers about half the time. I note with interest that both of you talk about fingernails. Mine are not an issue... they never touch the string. I use the meat of my fingertips to pick the strings.

I don't know about 'Cruces, but there are places here in northern NM where the music scene has been surprisingly good.HoochieCoochieMan wrote:Very nice indeed. We sell them at the hardware store where I work. I'll see if I can get ahold of one for you. (we are currently out of that particular one, but I may be able to order another)MojoJim wrote:I only have one question.

Re: Independence Day gig in the village
It's starting to look like a number of us have ties to New Mexico.
I lived in El Paso, TX for ten years, went to college there and played in a local band. Another band on the El Paso scene at that time was the Bobby Fuller Four ("I Fought the Law"). I was a Co-op student at White Sands Missle Range, NM. About half the co-ops came from UTEP (Univ. of Texas - El Paso) and the other half from New Mexico State Univ. in Las Cruces.
Blindboy, thanks very much for the offer on the hat - but please don't actually order one for me. I'm short, fat and bald. When I wear a hat it looks like a hat on a bowling ball. I like the dramatic pictures where you hunch over your guitar with the hat brim down. But with my build I don't "hunch over" much of anything these days. So, wearing a hat for me is pretty much a whimsey. I can do it - but it's not pretty. (That's me on the left)
