Trainwreckin' with a special guest

Post by Blindboy »

I haven't been around for a while... Sorry. This is my busy time of the year. Working my regular job, taking on side jobs, and doing projects around our property (including getting the BMW motorcycle up and running and legal... Yay!)
Last Monday a friend of mine sat in on the open mic. Felix is the front man for one of my very favorite New Mexico bands, Felix y los Gatos. (look for them on youtube  ) He and I run into each other on stage about once a year. This is the last song of the night. I am on the Casino through the tweed Fender, Felix is playing Deaconblue's Sheraton through his vintage Fender tweed. By the way, both Felix and I play fingerstyle.

I'll bet y'all can tell Felix and Blindboy apart, even if I haven't been heard in a while.

PS... I will get caught up on all the posts I have missed soon. Looks like lots of good stuff!

What more appropriate to listen to on a Monday morning than "Stormy Monday"! :D

A very laid back mellow version - love it - very toneful and tuneful. Has an intensity to it despite the mellow - the best of both worlds. And a really strong pulse runs through the song. Great playing by all the band. I think is one of the strongest versions you've posted of the TWBB playing this.

Nice to have a post from you on the forum - been missing hearing from you. I need my regular fix of new BB / TWBB numbers!!!!

Contrasting sounds from you and Felix, and you play together so well - would never think that this is a once a year thing.

Felix is a phenomenal performer. He and his accompanist did a Gypsy Jazz set that was killer!

The amp isn't really vintage Tweed Fender, actually. It's a Fender Pro Jr. rehoused in a larger 1x12 tweed cabinet. The amp itself has had a few teaks to make it a lot more full sounding than the stock PJ. It's a lot of fun to play, if I do say so myself.

Thanks, guys. Glad y'all liked it. :shy:
I'll probably post a couple more from this set... it was a fun one. Not like last night, which was, *ahem*, "difficult". :wall: We had a hard time gelling, the had a guest on drums, who was way too loud, and just flailed about without paying any attention to the song or the rest of the band. At the end of the song, the bass player and I both walked off stage, and the "guest" stated "F--- all you guys!" and left the bar. We need a guest screening process of some kind.
Thanks, HBL, I'm flattered, but don't songs on the playlist have to be original?

Yes, plus hosted on 12bar, otherwise the include doesn't work. Lately in my country the lawyers are again very active against all kinds of possible copyright infringements. A blogger was even sued because he had an embedded (!) YT video on his site. So I'm a bit careful about...

Man, did Bb get that right! :yikes: Last night was worse than a train wreck. Guest screening may be the only answer to prevent a repeat of that episode. It was bad enough that the core band couldn't gel/hook-up. The guest drummer stuck a fork in it. Too bad.

Shows how important it is that ALL members of a group have to pay close attention to the song and what the other members of the group are doing. One of the strengths of the core TWBB group is the way you all obviously do that.

The drummer certainly needs to pay attention as they have probably as much power as anyone in the group to cause chaos - for the need of even a flamboyant drummer paying attention I'm reminded of (when he was not out of it on substances / alcohol  ) Keith Moon - on videos of the best live Who performances you see a huge amount of the time he is watching Pete Townshend like a hawk so he can best fit in musically with the song. He might have been flamboyant in style but it was all designed to fit the song and the nuances of the Townshend rhythms.

Sounds like a really bad experience for the TWWB members - hope your next gig is back to normal. :fingerscrossed:

Maybe instead of a screening list you need an ejector seat behind the drums.

Don't give them any ideas VB, or I might have to start playing a Flying V.
