Nicotine deprivation jazz from the open mic...

Post by Blindboy »

This night marked seven days with no nicotine... I was wired on Prednisone and compensating with rum. Toward the end of the night, I just needed to PLAY... I started throwing random stuff at the band and they came through like gangbusters. I'll tell you what, music can sure be good therapy for whatever ails ya... I did manage to get through the night without bumming any cigs. Am now on day twelve.

It is a bit ragged, and the band didn't really know it, and I played it way to fast, but it sure was fun...
A Blindboy original.

YEAH.......like I said last time, you get that Casino swinging :music2: I sure like you your blues/jazzy style. Also, that was a pretty clear and good recording from the open stage. Are you recording that through a mixer to PA, or just mic'ing the amps into a mixer?

From you, that is quite a compliment...
I am not sure what the actual setup is on our gigs... Michael (the bass player/sound guru) has all the amps miked, running into some kind of mixer/interface, then going, seperately, into the PA, and a computer. I don't remember what studio software he uses. The drums get one mic, the bass is DI, so are the keys, vocals and guitar amps are miked.

Prednisone and rum seems to be a cocktail that suits you! Very impressed with the way you and the band can effectively rehearse a new piece in public and make it sound so much like you've been rehearsing it for weeks.

The speed gives it an edgy quality ... or is it the withdrawl symptoms? Day 12 ... you're doing well.

Thanks, VB... actually, I am very glad to get off of the prednisone, it was most unpleasant.
As for jamming off the cuff material like this... there are plenty of mistakes, one can tell that we haven't all played it together before, but the bass player knew the progression, and had shown it to the keyboard player at some point, and the drummer picked up on it fast. I love having a band and a venue where we can get away with this kind of thing. I would rather be a bit sloppy and have spontenaity, than be perfect and soulless.
It was kind of edgy (good description), but so was I.

Verrrry cool tune Blindboy; and for never having practiced it with the band, I think it came off swimmingly! Any chance you'd let us know the chords?
