Midnight Open G in Bb

I was playing around with Open G tuning today. Hadn't changed the Hagstrom from that tuning since Love in Vain. Out of a desire for a bit of bass and rhythm practice, which is needed badly, I accompanied a Lawrence Fritts Drums BT (Tenure Clock Blues - slightly speeded up) with the Hagstrom and the Hofner Violin Bass through the Vox Tonelab LE.
I then ended up putting some lead (Strat) and slide work (Hagstrom) on too - again through the Tonelab LE.
The drums + bass + rhythm BT is in the backing track section of the forum - called 'Midnight Open G in Bb'.
I'm sure it's possible to get a much better end product than mine (one paced and repetitive), which I've posted below. Anyone fancy a go with the BT and posting their recording here as a contrast - or anyone fancy a collab with it?

Way ahead of you there VB, I played for 7 hours yesterday and for a good 8 hours today, really loving to play at the moment what with this new support group and all.
So here is my take, I just went mental no holding back, as is my style with most things.
I listened through once then just did a take, might even have finished recording before you did!
Enjoy, great backing track too, right up my street.

Hey Mike - nice one!
Liked the dynamic variatons - and energy. No holding back as you said - you do those cascades of tumbling notes very convincingly.
Glad you liked the BT - my rhythm and bass playing skills (or lack of) are rusted to hell.
I think it fair to say we have two very contrasting recordings on this thread already!
Shows how much variety can be got from a basic 3 chords backing.

Two great takes on the same BT. And a great backing track! Like to see what others would do with it...

Well - I liked it, and found it hard to spot too many mistakes - the occasional mistake would suit the BT though - it has a few! It sounded to me that there were planned notes and a shape to your slide lead - that's way better than my "slide and hope" technique (which is why my slide is just used as a backing to the lead guitar - note to self to use open tuning more and get used to where the right notes are.
).
There's a clarity and ring to your notes that impresses me
- which guitar / gear did you use?
Thanks for having a go on the BT - like Blindboy I like to hear different interpretations on a BT.

Thanks VB
I used my Strat with the custom shop '69 pickups, on the bridge position.
The tonelab ST set up on US 2x12, I guess it's a blackface twin emulation.
A hint of delay and compression, plus a little bit of mild distortion to add
some "color" to the tone.
I didn't use any slide, just standard tuning and bends.
This set up used on neck + middle PUs sounds almost identical to the
Chris Isaac song "Wicked Games" intro part.
I really appreciate the slide part on your take, it adds some strengh/punch
to the song.

Thanks, glad you like it Oneeyedslide
There is something I just noticed, during all my recording process I used headphones
for late night noise problems. This is a noname medium range headphones.
I just listened again to my part this afternoon, but this time by using the external
speakers and I can say that there is a big difference in tone between the two.
On my speakers it is way more trebly than what I could ear in the headphones.
It is a bit annoying to have a sound that is muffled and without dimension (or "air")
while recording and setting up the eq and effects.
Actually, I wonder if it is the headphones or the speakers to take as a reference
Any ideas for a better headphones (brand and model)?
Thanks,

Ooops - imagine my embarassment at thinking you were using slide.
I'll just need to claim your bends were so good they sounded like slides, and the ringing tones did sound quite slide like ... honest!
Good work with the Tonelab ST. I think you're right about the blackface twin BTW.

I have the same light night noise issue, and until recently was using a pair of pretty cheap headphones which were skewed to treble sound (opposite to your problem). The trouble was in having to guess how much the final product - CD though hi fi speakers would differ for eq (quite a lot different!) - and mix the sound accordingly. Eventually I couldn't stand it any more and got a better pair of headphones - more than twice the price BUT be warned they're by no means pro standard - my eldest son had a pair so I was able to try before buying and I knew they would do. Sennheiser HD 215 - not perfect, but they have reduced the difference to tolerable levels for the moment.
