What style of guitar is you favorite for electric blues?

Post by deejaid »

Are you a Les Paul Guy? A Strat Guy? Why do you play the style guitar you do for electric blues? Is it body shape or pickup sound that makes you choose one guitar over another. Anyone play something not normally associated with the blues (Ibanez Musician Neck Thru perhaps)?

Personally, I have always loved the sound of Humbuckers. It just sounds right to me. You can go from hard rock to metal to blues and a humbucker works for it all. Being a big guy the size of a 335 style guitar fits me perfect. And it just looks like a blues guitar!

I like my Yamaha RGX.
With its mahagony set neck and body and now "PAF" type humbucker pickups it has the sound of a classic Les Paul. But with it´s double cut and rounded "Stratocaster" body shape and 24" scale it hangs very balanced in a neck strap and is "soft" to my body.

Ahhh .... Ermmmm ...... well ..... errrrrr! :icon_whoknows:
You could ask me an easier question - like can I explain Quantum Physics. :tease:

I'll have to think hard:-
A "Strat" that makes me play in a different way to any other guitar and is great for those atmospheric, Gilmourish / Knopflerish blues.
A Humbucker ES335 substitute in the Viking Deluxe - the hollow body sound added to the humbuckers - great for cleanish lead playing. A warmer tone than the solid body guitar.
A P90 almost-Casino in my VSA590 (semi hollow rather than fully hollow) which gives such great old-fashioned rich chiming tone particularly with rhythm playing.

They all do different things better than each other. Ohhhh - decisions, decisions! :wall:

It isn't an easy thing to pick up a guitar from this list, they are all great instruments for blues playing.
A Strat because it is so versatile and it feels like home, I mean it's comfy.
I have a neck through Yamaha SG with humbuckers that sounds quite good for blues playing.

You can't just choose 1 guitar for blues. evey guitar has an apeal of some sort. I have player "metal guitars" that when their EQ was set right thay sounded great. its all opinion, and they all have different sounds. i Play all my guitars evenly as they all sound diferent. In the end I voted for Stratocaster mainly because single coils have a great sound to them.

Oh I agree there isn't one type of guitar that is better for the blues. And I know many people have a Strat (single coil) and a les paul (humbucker) for different sounds. My question was more along the lines of do you have a "go-to" guitar that you feel a fits your style and gives you the sound you want more than other guitars you may have.

Well, I voted "Strat" because I have been playing the same one for over twenty years, and am very used to it, but perhaps I should have voted "Casino", because I currently play mine at least as much, or more than the Strat. Besides, nobody has voted for the Casino yet.

I don't have a particular favorite. My go to is my EC strat, but my ES-135 is fantastic too. That said, most of my favorite players use strats (EC, Jimi, Stevie and Jimmie, and, of course, Buddy)

I was surprised that the SG didn't get any votes in the voting presented. For me, as being an hardcore Cream fan, the Gibson SG is one of the top blues guitars, and also used by Carlos Santana, Mick Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks and other prominent players.

Well after seeing EC and SRV blow away the competition in the favorite blues artist poll I figured Strats would win this poll.

G&L Bluesboy is my primary guitar
Fender strat for slide

Looking to get a Clapton strat sometime in the future, though. The G&L is perfect, so I'm not quite sure why I want it so bad

I had to think about it. it is indeed a hard one.

I like the sound of a hollow body with humbuckers, then again the cingle coil for the little faster music is also beautiful.

If you asked my a few months ago i had sad only the hum, but now i mod. my strat with vintage fender single coils i like those as many as the hums.

In sort; depends what song there must be played, yes that a good anser

If you had asked me this question a few years ago, I would have said ES-335 hands down. Since then I've played single coil Fenders pretty much and almost exclusively Telecasters. These days I'd have to say the Stratocaster, though. Seems the Strat has become the go to guitar for playing the blues by most people in that genre.

Isn't the correct answer... "the one I have in my hands" ?

Normally I would have gone with the obvious answer, which is Stratocaster, however recently I got a SG and it's been in my hands much more then the Strat, so my answer is indeed the correct one... that being the SG that's in my hands when they aren't on the keyboard.

They are all good, depends on what sound you want. My preference is for a strat, through a Fender amp. I previously used to play a 335-style hollow-body archtop through a Marshall (JCM800), also a great tone but very different.

The humbucker sound is very warm, a LP in particular can sound very sweet, but nothing screams like a strat :yikes:

Strat for me. I mostly play my acustic, but once in a while when I wanna try to play electric and sound like EC (lolo) I just love those single pickups. But then again I love those Hollowbodies too with the Humbugs. Also ya gotta love the SG
I guess It depends on what tone your'e after.

I'd say the Fender Stratocaster is the best guitar for playing blues. Very clean sounding, also quite gorgeous looking. But, the next purchase of mine would be a Epiphone Dot (ES-355) copy. Gibson ES-335 and Fender Strat are the best. Not crazy about the Les Paul.

MMMHH
I have a Epiphone Sheraton type 2, and the sound is great, realy.
But some songs asking for a cingle coil strat guitar thats for sure.

My firts guitar was the squier and i sold it after i had the epi, but wen time past i realist that i mist the strat, sow i bought my strat back.
But still i missed someting.
HBL say; try some other pick-ups, and sow after a wile i bought the fender vintage '60 pick-ups, and that was what i mist.

The sound is great and when i see a song i mark it above; strat or epi.

Same story, same guitars, except that I didn't sell my strat :naughty:
Most of the time I use my Sherry, but some songs really need a strat sound :music2:
