GAS attack continues - changing tuners on my strat

Post by 12bar »

More recently I've been playing my strat more and more and compared to my Sheraton I didn't like the tuners, not as smooth as I want. Now I ordered a set of original Fender machine heads, and later saw that they are vintage style (cut instead of hole). I hope they fit my Korean strat from the 90's...

My Sherry needs a new toggle, so I ordered a new one, too. Replacing looks not as easy as on my strat  all has to be done through that tiny f-hole. At least something to do during the upcoming holidays. :xmas_1:

Adjustments through an f-hole - EEEK ... brave man! :yikes:
That should take up a day or two of the holidays!

Well, first project went wrong. Tuners don't fit.
Looks like on this pic: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8356/8359 ... 4e21_n.jpg

I've found some threads on the net with the same problem, but the neck on 93' Korean strats is not always the same.
Some fit, some don't. I have to cut new holes, not the problem, but ADDING wood is not possible.

Not always a complete guitar, even guitar parts are sometimes considered as GAS.

The answer to the age-old question "how many guitars do you really need?" is "just one...more!"

OK, so I ordered 6 Schaller M6 Mini 6L Chrome tuners and a tapered reamer.
Removed the old ones.
Enlarged the hole to 9,8 mm using the reamer.
Filled the old holes with toothpicks and glue.
Cut off extending wood.
Sand off for a nice finish.
Added some oil.
Put on the new ones.
Adjusted them.
Finished!

Nicely done! I have had to do that on a couple of guitars.

Nicely done - no need for the impossible task of adding wood with these tuners! They should do the job well for you.

Great job Gerd !

Mhhh First Lady has to go to a real guitar doctor.
Neck problems ( High E rattles against some frets and it is getting worse)
Neck pocket problems ( small/short tear in the body where it meets the neck's side. Noticed it today while playing )

I still have the Blues......
A long time ago, in the old forum : Registered: Mon, 27 Nov 2006. Wonder were the other old members all went....

Doesn't sound good... :alright:
Neck adjustment should be possible, but a crack in the body is something for a good doc.
Guitar tools turned out to be quite expensive! Even a small fret file...
Let's hope for the best... :fingerscrossed:

My next project: the toggle switch through the f-hole. :eye_rub:
