DIY Treble Booster

Post by vancouverois »

Here is my TB replica.
Actually I have found the vero-board schematics of the DAM Red Rooster. It has two knobs (Boost & Range)instead of a single boost control.
The transistor is a germanium one, the boost is quite powerful. The effect is quiet, almost no hiss

A few samples, I tried to keep the same output level with and without the effect.
Files are raw, no post processing and the guitar and effect controls were not changed during the recording.
Recorded with the Tonelab and my Casino-like Peerless, well I didn't try to overload the Tonelab with the Boost control of the effect.
I still have to find a custom enclosure to house the circuit.

What can I say? It's a bit difficult to hear the difference between non-amplified and amplified signal. I guess all the files you uploaded has amplified guitar snippets itself. For that reason, I can not say anything other than that it sounds good. I have nothing to compare to unless I misunderstood you and you uploaded snippets that are not boosted the treble.

Now, the problem to solve was to make of the amplifier if you do not find space in the guitar.

Good luck with your builds.

The boost sounded effective to me  (with headphones) though as usual I could recognise it better on the cleaner sound.

But that's just me - I see / hear demos of different gear at higher distortion levels and I can't make out much difference contrary to most other peoples comments!

Impressive that it's done with such minimal hiss.

It looks like the real thing is difficult to get hold of / extremely pricey - price boosted on the back of the names like Rory Gallagher and Brian May I guess. So to DIY it this well is a good trick if you can do it.

Over here the difference in boosted and normal signal is clear.
Sounds pretty good to me. I'd like to hear that on a tube amp of some kind, Amp just on the edge of clean and overdrive.
Hit the boost and drive there is.

Thanks VB, actually I just followed the recommendations from the site.
No ceramic caps, metal film resistors 1% tolerance and quality big potentiometers instead of the cheap and generic mini ones.

Indeed and I wasn't so eager to spend without trying as locally in my region there is no store re-selling boutique stuff.
So I found the vero board schematics and gave a try to experience it as a hobby.

Thanks Hans, I hear you a tube amp would be really welcome with this effect.
For the time being, the closest amp I have is the ol' Peavey Bandit 112 Transtube but still solid state.
I have to try that if the neighborhood wants to cooperate!
