Where can I find lacquer ?

Post by MichaelRobinson »

Help me, pleas.

I'm about to start up my Les Paul '59 project ( I'm in the fase to buy stuff except the guitar. I preper for the painting job) and need some help with lacquer. I want TRANSPARENT colors. This I will paint the top of the guitar with but I can't find the colors that Gibson use. Anyone here who know where I can buy them ?

Looking forward for some help.

Maybe this place is of use? :icon_whoknows:
http://reranchstore.stores.yahoo.net/index.html
I notice the page has a link to the main website where there are finishing instructions.

I also see there is a section on the site for "Gibson speciality colours".

Hope this helps - good luck! :fingerscrossed:

Shipping might be expensive, but this place is great!

I have used them before, and my Dad used them a lot. Their catalogue is really good too... has lots of tips and information.

It seems like there are restrictions about shipping internationally solvents and lacquers from the US.

Good point ... there's the same problem with the re-ranch site I linked - sorry MR! :wall:
Hopefully some of the information and instruction stuff there might still be useful.

It reminds me of part of the (many) reasons I ended up using Tru-Oil as the finish on my self build Strat.

MR, I was going to suggest guitar re ranch also but wondered about the shipping. You might check with some automotive paint suppliers in your area don't know if lacquer is still used in the automotive feild in Europe any more also they do use lacquers for refinishing fine furnature so that might be a place to look into also. This video save lot of thinking on my behalf. Very instructive and it don't seem to be difficult.

Thank's for the tip, ElMano.

Hi Michael

http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/ has some very good info regarding lacquers and guitar finishing.

Unfortunately they are not permitted to send lacquer outside of the UK, but they have a list of European suppliers including http://gitarrdelar.se/ who may be useful to you.

Hope this helps - Best of Luck!

I appresiate that. Thank you.

You need my address and I will send it to you in a PM in case it's impossible to order directly. It's just pigments I need and it seems to me they sell it in powder. No danger for the mailman.

I have placed an order at the company that sell the stuff but I'm confused about the payment. I have sent an e-mail and askt them how I can pay the bill but they have not answered yet . I hope the amount of pigment I need is enough for the company to care about my request.
