Homemade Beer Bottle Slide
Homemade Beer Bottle Slide
Hi Guys,
I'm no slide player now but I may have to learn. Here's something that I tried and it worked great so I thought that I would share it with you. It's really easy.
Step 1. Drink the beer... no pictures for this, I was busy!
Step 2. Score the neck about 2" down from the lower ridge. Don't try to do this by had, you can't do it... trust me... experience speaking here. What I did was rig a quick little device with some scrap wood to hold the glass cutter (easy to find at any home store or hardware store for just a couple of $). Be sure to score the neck all the way around. You don't have to over do it, but just be sure there are no "gaps" in the score line.
Step 3. Heat some water to almost, but not, boiling.
Step 4. Carefully pour the hot water over the score line, all around, to heat the bottle.
Step 5. Hold the hot bottle under cold running water. It probably won't break the first time. Don't worry... repeat steps 4 & 5 and the neck will snap right off.
Step 6. Using some fine sand paper moistened with water sand the sharp edges.
Step 7. This is the step that I can't do... play.

That's awesome.........that beats any slide you'd pay way too much for at the guitar store. Plus you get to drink the beer!!!

Pretty slick.
I remember, as a kid, watching my Dad make one from a wine bottle... He would soak a string in gasoline, then wrap it around the neck of the bottle, light it, and when it burned out, dunk it in ice water. I never have tried that one. (I prefer a bronze slide).

Great idea.
Though I have a suspicion, as someone that once managed to cut themselves on a safety designed potato peeler, that combining alcahol and sharp edges of glass could see me taking a trip to A&E!
And if those Grolsch bottles still exist and are the right size you also get a free strap lock at the same time from the rubber washer on the bottle neck?

Great invention! I have made a couple of slides out of wine bottles and i use to put the glas cutter into the vice en twisted the bottle by hand. A lot of times it wont work. The line is going al kind of way's and most of the time the neck is not strait broken. I gonna made my self a construction like you did. And i gonne put the idea on the Dutch guitarbuilders site to I know for shure they ar greatfull for this tip

Nice work Golfxzq
I always admire anyone who finds a reason for doin' stuff that involves emptying beer bottles !!
and to end up with a decent end product too !!
I think we need to hear some snippets of "Beer Bottle Blues" ..... so we can see the sort of tone that Bud Light provides
Relative of course to slides made from other premium brand bottles ..............
Millar / Hieneken/ Carlsburg/ Grolsch/ Molsen/ Coors / Budweiser / Buckbean /Corona / Lone Star / Marthasville /Michelob / Moosehead
Which maakes the best slide .............Could be one fine .. and long ..............project !!
Oh ! and if you wanna get to wine .....Bob Brozman suggest Mateus 5th Bottles

Chuck the wine in the sink ..............its rubbish !!

Yes indeed, VB, I've used those washers for a lot of other projects as well.VikingBlues wrote:And if those Grolsch bottles still exist and are the right size you also get a free strap lock at the same time from the rubber washer on the bottle neck?
I wonder if there is any discernible tone differences between a bottle of Dom Pérignon and a bottle of Mateus?Strummer07 wrote:Oh ! and if you wanna get to wine .....Bob Brozman suggest Mateus 5th Bottles

Just once I managed, albeit much more crudely, to get the other end off as well. Stopped that restriction from the lip.
