New Guitar in the 'Stable'
New Guitar in the 'Stable'
Hi Guys
I have got my hands on a Squier Stratocaster Affinity for a low price.
One of my sisters has a friend that found the guitar and a Fender Frontman 15G Amp in an attic clean out.
I bought them for 500 SEK ( approx 50 euro).
Here is a picture of the guitar
A close look on the guitar shows that is has been used very very little or if ever..
Serial no shows that is built in Indonesia by the Cort factory in 2005

I have the same one,
I modded mine mod by putting Fender MIM (Made In Mexico) Classic 60's stratocaster Vintage Style pick-ups in place of the originals.
Now the sound is great i like it more and more.
Congrats with the guitar Kalle

Hi Everybody
I am doing set-up work ( intonation, action, pickup height etc) on the guitar and sofar it´s feels playable in a good way.
About the sound, I am not a Stratocaster expert , but the pickups are maybe a bit "sharp" in the tone.
With new strings it has a "twangy sound" in the bridge pickup.
I will come back with some sound examples.

Kalle, roll back the volume a little, that will take-out some of the sharpness.

Re: New Guitar in the 'Stable'
Nice find! I wouldn't mind a cheap strat... :)
I think the pickups might be ceramic (and maybe overwound?), which might account for the shrill tone.

Re: New Guitar in the 'Stable'
One more thing
The neck width at the nut is more narrow than on my other guitars.
It´s 40.6 mm (1.62 inch) compared to 44 mm on my other guitars.
String(E)-to-string(e) distance = 32.6 mm on Affinity
String(E)-to-string(e) distance = 35.4 mm on my Yamaha RGX
This makes it a bit more complicated to play open chords close to the nut without string buzzing from fingers touching played strings.

Congrats Kalle, for €50 you can't go wrong.
Just a thought, you may want to try another nut to see if it improves the string spacing
and the overall open chords feel.
I had a Squier with a faulty nut, I replaced it and it was like night and day.

Re: New Guitar in the 'Stable'
Good find, looks good, and a great price!
Though I can see how the narrow nut / string spacing will make it feel quite different. I never realised there were so many variations in sizes on the different versions / makes of 'strat' till I came to try to assemble / build one.
As weelie said ceramic pickups could be having an effect. There is (as always with issues of tone) a lot of dispute about the differences between alnico and ceramic, but Tim Mills (Bareknuckles) take on it is that ceramics boost the bass and treble but not the mids and reckons the sound is more suited to those who like to use a fast and percussive pick attack (which would explain why I don't get on too well with them with no speed and no pick ).
