History chart of the Blues?

Post by rcwilk »

Hi,

Does anyone have links to sites that show time line charts of the blues musicians, especially pre-60's ?

Thanks if available,

Don't know if these are any help, but here goes;

http://www.bluesnexus.com/history.php
http://www.bluescentric.com/history/text_timeline.php
http://www.bluessearchengine.com/bluesi ... story.html

This is a link that ElMano gave;
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/blues-tr ... 59138?mt=8
too bad it works on iPhone or iPad, but as you can see there's a timeline section on the first screenshot.
Here's the www pages and I didn't find the timeline there;

Thanks Pena,

There are some very nice tributes here. I think more what I am looking for is something more scholarly. If this doesn't exist online, maybe it would be a good graduate school project for someone. (that's what I do when I can't find something, give it to grad students as projects!) . I'll have to think about what school to put this out to and how to make it attractive to a student... Blues are typically a topic only covered briefly in professional musics schools. Lomax seems to be an exception to the high-education/blues gap. Is Ted Gioia still alive? Anyone have a contact address for him?

Gratefully,

Not exactly a history, but maybe of some help:

You're right, Blues is often only seen as a sub-genre of Jazz, which is plain wrong...

Ah yes, thanks 12bar. That chart popped nicely into excel. It is an interesting approach to start by sub-genres, though I can see there will be problems or overlaps down the line - like is JLHooker to be placed in pure Delta or Detroit or what about when he incorporates british blues in later pieces? I don't know much about the blues history, but suspect this could get complex.

I'm now wondering if (given excel records) a time line, one per record (excel data line or row) for each blues person, and maybe a record (excel data field lines or rows) of a specific color coding underneath for the type of blues they were playing during any given period/dates. ha ah, probably a lot of rainbows for all of them, but this at least moves in the direction of a timeline that one could look at in a glance and see what people were playing at different times. There could be another row for WHERE they were playing at those times as well.
