Trying to tame the SG

You know how a Jazz musician will often take a blues tune and turn it into a nice jazz song? I take a nice jazz tune and turn it into a blues jam.

Trying to tone down the SG (it likes to yell) and get some sounds that aren't so over the top.

Re: No Blues, but...

That was lovely! The music matched the imagery very nicely.
There seem to be quite a few waterways for you to explore where you live. I have never been any kind of boater, but while in the Bahamas last year, my wife and I did some sea kayaking and had a blast.

Re: Still playing DADGAD

Wow! That is some lovely music! Drowsy Maggie was beautiful and I liked your "Fridge" tune as well. I can really hear the darkness of that mode. I have enough trouble keeping track of standard tuning, let alone the open G and D tunings I use for slide. Some years ago, I went to a gu...

Re: Playing in a three piece band

Thank you, gentlemen. :D Glad you enjoyed it.
I do like playing three piece for a bit of a change. We don't get to practice it much, but it is fun when we do.

Playing in a three piece band

Man, the political situation in my country is giving me the Blues, big time. :tears: Here's a rare thee piece version of the Trainwreck Blues Band. Our keyboard player was out of town for a couple of weeks. This is a cover of the Elmore James tune, filtered through SRV. I'm using the Strat, through ...

Nice!
Ya gotta love Otis Rush. I've posted up a couple of versions of this tune. I really like playing it.

Fingerpickin'

This video shows the difference in tone and response between the Strat and the SG, used in my previous vid. All amp settings were the same, no pedals were used, both played with fingers rather than a pick. Neither one of these videos have very good sound (the mix was much better in person), but mayb...

Re: The old Gibson SG...

Thanks guys... I'm having fun trying to tame this beast. :music2: The different neck and very different tone and response are a bit of a challenge. Lately, I haven't been all that happy with my playing, perhaps this challenge will help me get over the "slump". For a bit of contrast, I'll p...

The old Gibson SG...

... gets a new lease on life. My buddy did a stellar job refurbishing my 1969 SG. This is the second time I have used it, and I'm starting to get a feel for it. It plays very differently from my Strat; the neck is narrower but fatter and it feels longer because of where the neck joins the body. I ha...

Re: Restoring the SG

100_2751.JPG Ok, I finally got my 1969 Gibson SG Pro back from my buddy. He put a pair of Gibson 490 humbuckers in it, recut the nut and flipped and recut some saddles and got it to intonate without replacing any bridge peices. The reason it took so long to get it back was that it apparently desper...

Very nice job!
My father was a luthier and made one of those once. It sounded neat, but I could never get used to playing on my lap. (that's the reason I got rid of my old lap steel years ago)

Another Trainwreck vid...

Here is another vid from last Monday night. We start off three piece, then our friend Joe Green shows up on trumpet, so I give him the nod. This is one our drummer likes a lot (he is a big Chris Layton fan). The dogs name is Blue. For some reason, the bass isn't picking up on the cellphone vid. :sad...

Re: Trainwreck Stomp

Thank you, gentlemen. Is this the same Okie Stomp that I recall in a stripped down version of you on acoustic guitar in a duo with - was it your brother? Good ear. Yes, this is the same tune, just with drums, bass (which is hard to hear in this recording), and a trumpet. I like what Rob, our durmmer...

Trainwreck Stomp

Here is a rough cellphone vid from Monday night, the day after Christmas. Our keyboard player is out of town so we're playing three piece. Our good friend Joe Green sat in on trumpet, making it a four piece. Again, the sound quality was much better in person. One can also hear the effects of ...

Re: Tribute to my Father

Unfortunatley, my internet connection won't let me listen to the song. :wall:
I, too lost my father less than a year ago, and was fortunate enough to have a band and a venue that let me play my heart out on the night that I found out. As John Lee Hooker put it: The Blues is the Healer.

Re: Aching Pinkie Blues in C

It's nice to hear some electric VB! I was only able to listen to about half of the song, due to my sloooow internet connection, but I enjoyed the tasty playing and sweet tones. I can't remember the last time I played along with a backing track. I still have no way to play into the compute...
