Re: Checking in from SF Bay
FWIW, the song is Black Peter (lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Jerry Garcia). As VB guessed above, the 12/8 time signature is listed in a song book. Then I saw the time listed as 4/4 in another fairly reliable source. To my ears 4/4 doesn't seem to work and my count gets mixed up with all the t...

Re: Checking in from SF Bay
Thanks for the tips guys. I think I'm timing things okay for the sections of the song where there are lyrics but the parts without lyrics leave me wondering if I'm counting correctly. I suspect I'm not. C'est la vie.

Checking in from SF Bay
Hi all, It's been several months since I checked in on the forum but it's good to see the same cool vibes that I remember so well. I hadn't played in maybe 8 months but restarted over the weekend. Calluses are long gone so it's going to be a little bit of a journey back. I was pleasantly surprised t...

Re: Chitlin Crew Stormey Monday 1e raw recording
Very professional sounding.   I give props to the drummer for nice subdued playing. The vocalist has a nice voice. He could use a bit more dirt for this tune, or maybe just a tad higher volume in the mix, but it's good nonetheless. Let me know when your tour hits Southern Ca...

Nice. I really enjoy that kind of "noodling." And the tone is very satisfying. But that cut at the end....ouch!

Oh, that explains why things look different. I thought it was the latest iteration of Windoze Internet Exploder on my machine but now I see the changes came from your end of the wire. Whatever you're doing Gerd, thanks and keep up the good work.
Cheers!

Re: Rookie question
I found a few tabs for the song on the web. One is a booklet with 14 of Rev. Gary Davis songs as taught by Ernie Hawkins. The others are various Hot Tuna versions (I guess Jorma played it several different ways). The problems with these are, 1) they're a little too challenging for my skill level and...

Re: Rookie question
Thanks Gerd. Em pentatonic is what I've been working on in walk-up or walk-down transitions between Em->Am->Em or Em->B7->Em chord changes but I haven't found any equally pleasing transition for the G/A7/D7 sequence. Are you suggesting the same scale using G as the root? Apologies for my musical ign...

Rookie question
Hi all, I've been fiddling around with strumming the chords for Reverend Gary Davis' "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and wanted to try to throw in a few lead lines but don't really know where to start. The song is in Em (Em, Am, B7, with G, A7, D7 and C). What would be the likely scale to use ...

I do; but then again, I'm an old Deadhead accustomed to enjoying the ride while the band takes a wandering exploration of the musical landscape.Blindboy wrote:Hope y'all like it.
Say what?Blindboy wrote:Not that hard to play along with, just use the C minor blues scale, and some kind of minor modal scale.

The only thing that really matters during our brief stint on this spinning blue orb is that we have the opportunity to love and to be loved. I can tell from your words that your mother experienced both of those gifts. My sincere condolences to you and you family.

Re: Delta Blues
I downloaded the file and started playing it as I went back to concentrating on other tasks such as answering emails. Even though I wasn't really paying attention to the song I soon realized that my foot was tapping along with the groove. I like the laid back tone to the set up. Nicely done. :thumbs...

Re: Playing around...
No worries, my understanding of many of these terms is muddy so I need to test myself sometimes. HOTRS is one of the handful of songs I can play but only the arpeggiated chords; not the melody. Maybe I'll take a stab at the melody part if I stop being so lazy.
