Re: New Bass

VERY nice VB  So you're finding the short scale easier to manage? A new bass is not high on my list of priorities, but when I get around to it I will certainly be considering a short scale. Although I love the Fender Jazz, I always find it very awkward when I haven't played one for a while...

Re: 2011 Masters

I'm not a golf fan, but I got interested in the Masters this year (first time ever). It was certainly great entertainment, very exciting finish. I was obviously sad for Rory, but as you said, he will be back.

Re: All Over Again (Solo Version)

Wow, that was absolutely amazing!        Your singing is excellent, very soulful yet understated. Guitar tone is excellent, makes me want a Les Paul  But most of all, your lead fills and solo are spot on, very inventive, great technique on ...

Re: The Man Behind the Mask

Thanks for all the kind words! I'm considering changing the end, as suggested by Mike and Blindboy. After listening back a few times, I'm not really happy with the tone on the ending solo anyway, it sounds a bit thin. I'm thinking of re-recording the rhythm guitars after the third verse, with a bit ...

Re: Light and Shade

One of the things I love about guitar playing is when, occasionally, you stop thinking about what you're doing, get "in the zone", when everything you try to pull off works and just sounds great. When your brain takes a back seat, and your fingers take over on their own. There is nothing i...

Re: The Man Behind the Mask

Aww, Mike. I thought I was finished this one! But that's such a good suggestion, I just might have to try it. It will be a lot more work, and I'll have to wait until I can crank up the amp a bit...hmm, I have some time off work around Easter, maybe I could do it then. But yeah, I can hear it now, di...

Re: This guy is outta hand!!!!

His acoustic slide playing is excellent, great feel and technique, but his playing on the cigar box just blows me away. Incredible

The Man Behind the Mask

Here's my latest song, I was going for a bit of an Allman Brothers meets Pink Floyd sound, didn't get there but I'm happy with what came out. I think my singing is slowly improving, although this did require 8 or 9 takes on 3 different days before I was happy with it. :wall: Usual gear, Fruity Loops...

Very interesting, I read the history but the gear stuff on the Chimera was a bit over my head. Looks like a great guitar though!

Thanks for osting this VB. There are lots of approaches to modes, but this looks particularly useful for us blues players who are used to playing pentatonic boxes

Ever wanted to fold up your guitar...?

Saw this and thought it was cool  http://www.amazon.com/Voyage-Air-VAOM-1C-Premier-Full-Size-Orchestra/dp/B001RIY4T2/ref=sr_1_7?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1301599293&sr=1-7 The professional ones are probably decent quality, but expensive. There are cheaper models, but they'...

Re: Have these Onions Shuffled Away too far?

Hi VB, Both the clean and distorted versions sound good to me, I think I prefer the first one :D Playing with distortion needs a bit more control than clean, to get that "pure" distorted tone. You need to be very aware of damping the strings you are not playing, and also varying the pick a...

Re: John Mayer

I wasn't aware of Mayer the "pop star" at all. I first saw him at one of the Crossroads festivals, I think it was the 2005 one (on DVD), and I just saw him as a very good bluesy guitar player. I was impressed. I have since listened to a lot of his music, I really like the Trio album...

Re: Bending & Vibrato

Like most things, it just takes practice. I find that when I'm adding vibrato to a note, I just use my fretting finger to achieve it, but after a bend my fingers are fully extended, so I use my whole hand to create vibrato, keeping my fretting finger fairly rigid. Another nice technique after a bend...

Re: Specialist Music

I became a fan of the Doors, Pink Floyd and Hendrix as a teenager in the 80s, and it was through their music that I became aware of the Blues. I listened to a lot of music back then, indie, rock, goth, but blues was always there too. Steadily my appreciation of the blues grew, through John Lee Hooke...

That was fantastic!

Possibly the best thing I've heard on this sire, and that's saying something!

The blend of piano and guitar really works, gives it and authentic old-school feel, great tune, and needless to say the playing is top-notch too.
