Watch the look on Derek Trucks's face when Clapton starts his solo. You can see him watching Clapton and smiling even though he just blew everyone away. I saw Derek Trucks play with the ABB a few years back and I had to pick up my jaw off the ground afterwards.

There are a lot of very good suggestions here and yes, the type of slide, your string gauge and action are all personal things. However some things remain constant.
