Re: so excited!!
Sorry to be dumb, but Beano is the -59 Les Paul Clapton used to play, right? Got stolen though. FYI: I had a chance to work with John Mayall personally once when I lived in Los Angeles and worked in a 24-trk studio as a recording engineer. I hate to say it was a let-down, but it was. The truth is th...

I would like to find backing tracks (or karoake .kar) of these songs in traditional format (not country or rock). Anyone know where?

Re: USB Interfaces
As it's a crappy Vista laptop I'm using I'm a bit stuffed on Firewire - which it doesn't have. And also a bit stuffed using Vista - which seems to be one of the least music recording friendly OS's there's been. I had so fewer problems recording with older XP computers - that's progress for you. Jus...

Re: Approach to chord substitution
I think it is a question of being more clear about exactly where the chords go. In the key of A, it is easy to substitute G#minorb5 for the E7 because it is all the same notes - you have just put the G# in the bass. G#min7b5 = G# B D (natural) F#... (if you add an E this is basically an E9 chord) sa...

Favorite blues chords
How many of you guys pretty much stick to the standard pinky hitting the sixth/seventh of your barre chord while playing the blues, and how many of you go for the jazzier 7 - chords? These are some of my favorite blues chords (Clapton uses these first two in "Sittin' on top of the World" a...

Re: California Princess
I am not sure how you are doing you double tracking now with your lead over your rhythm, but I suggest you buy some kind of a drum machine you can have playing during your recordings. If you could add some drums it would really clarify what you are playing - and I think you would find your playing g...

Re: Major Scale: get confortably
Part of the trick to playing a major scale is having a song that CALLS for it. The major scale is actually very rare in rock, even (let alone blues). The best example I can think of pop songs that use it are "And your Bird Can Sing" by the Beatles and some of Christopher Cross light rock h...

Re: How to make turnarounds
Wow... I read that Wikipedia article on turnarounds - quite the essay. I started reading about substitution chords and they talk about the minor ii in the first inversion, which was popular with Beethoven and Moonlight Sonata.... la la la Basically, that is the magic chord in "Something" b...

Re: How to make turnarounds
As far as theory goes think about this (Key of A-blues scale). On the E-chord V-chord - the "good" notes are: E - either 5-string;7th-fret or 3-string bend 7th-fret up to 9-fret (E-note) G - 4-string;5th-fret B - 4-string;9th-fret D - 3-string;7th-fret or basically play the e-pentatonic sc...

Re: How to make turnarounds
Since you mentioned me I will post some of my favorite tricks: Everything is in key of A - so I will work around the box built on the fifth fret. The chords are | E | D | A | E | <<- those are each 1 measure, four counts. Let's say this is a SLOW blues with a cut-time feel (one-and, two-and, three-a...

Pickup Wiring
Maybe one of you guys knows the answer to this question? Why are Les Paul's and other Gibson guitars wired in such a way that the volume and tone controls are not separate for each pickup? Wouldn't it make sense to have one volume and one tone control for each of your two pickups? That way if you pu...

Re: Grounding????
I think it is probably a good idea to add shielding foil to a guitar, copper and silver are the best conductors so they are probably the best shields, too. I would never try to ground and entire guitar to earth through the cabling, though. That is a vast exercise in futility. They say it is enough j...

Re: Redhouse
Great take on Red House! That song really lends it self to ripping blues riffs with its slow 6/8 feel. Getting good distortion means working a lot with the tone controls. Generally, the bridge pickup is going to have more defined tones than the neck pickup. Les Pauls (for me) work better with sustai...

Re: The Fernandes Sustainer System
I checked back a few days ago and saw that no one had really checked this out - now you have. I should included more information. The sustainer is an addition you add to the guitar that looks like a pickup, but it is not, it is a magnetized system that keeps any note vibrating. Yes, it does the same...

Funny you should mention this, I am going to post a new post about something I just found that I think I should have heard about a long time ago - the Fernandes Sustainer.
