The Old Man of the Sea - Collab

HELLO EVERYONE!!!!!

I am so excited by this. chickenbananaclapbananachicken

HBL has finished his collab work on my Old Man of the Sea song, and he's moved it on to a whole new level. clapclapclapclapclapclap

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8842441

The guitar work from the end of the first verse that HBL has brought in is magnificent, and so beatifully phrased. The spirit of Dave Gilmour is really walking in this piece now. thumbsupthumbsupthumbsupthumbsupthumbsup

I don't know how I am going to sleep tonight - I feel like a kid at Christmas who has just had his biggest wish come true. dance

I hope you all enjoy this one.  smile big_smile smile

It seems to me that you guys have elevated some good blues playing into the realm of real artistry.  This is really outstanding.

This level of professionalism deserves a wider audience.

Congratulations!!!

Re: The Old Man of the Sea - Collab

This has been a fascinating and exciting experience. I've been receiving every few days samplers and tasters of his ideas from HBL and boy has it built up the anticipation.

The final version surpassed my highest hopes.

The way this piece has fitted together from the start has been quite spooky. At the root of it all was the lyrics - they fitted perfectly for rhyhmn and helped create the atmosphere. I've felt at times as if there was someone else at work with me even before HBL got to work on putting some final magical pieces in the jigsaw.

I think its time to go bananas!!!   bananabananabananabananabananabanana

It makes me want to rush out and get a good Strat - but I'd need to spend the next 20 years practicing like mad to have a chance of getting even near those sounds. You should have seen the size of the grin on my face when the first phrase of HBLs solo after the first verse hit the big Gilmour bend. big_smile

Re: The Old Man of the Sea - Collab

Thanks all  big_smile

Oheee  VB,  still underestimating yourself my friend ?    I didn't leave your first lead in just to be polite. naughty  It is different, it is good, it is well played and runs like clockwork.
To jump ahead smile I cut out the rest to get more space for my work. Not because you didn't play well

And...   the fills during the verses are cut out couse your singing doesn't need them.

(done smile HBL spoke up  (mumble...grumble....   motz )

wink

I'm trying to keep my feet on the ground HBL, and its not easy! banana

I spent a lot of years playing strat style guitars, but only started to make good progress when I started using "Gibson" style humbucker equipped guitars. This is why I feel I need to resist the temptation to rush out and get a strat when I hear what players like you can manage with them. Now possibly those strat style guitars I had were just not the right quality (I'm pretty sure they weren't very good thumbsdown) but I think I should stick with what I've got just now. I'm still getting better and I love the sounds I'm starting to get and I love the way I'm learning here from you all about phrasing and dynamics and interpretation. I also find it inspiring that this learning process should haev no end - always something new to discover. smile

I remember when you raised the point about not playing any lead fills at all during the verses and I remember I wasn't sure. Partly through lack of pratice at singing, and also in confidence. icon_redface  You were absolutely right though - the song flows and sounds better for having no fills and it brings out the words better which is as it should be. I am glad I had the nerve to mix the vocals high enough in the mix for them to be clear - it was very tempting to try to hide them a bit.

I hope too you feel my opinion was right in that your lead playing should be similarly uncluttered by other guitar lines - I really like being able to hear the full tones of a well played guitar.

I'll be raising a glass to the finished product tonight. beer

Re: The Old Man of the Sea - Collab

I am truly humbled...  now I know that I am in the presence of experts.  Although I am well past my prime and started my guitar experience very, very, late in life I now feel like an infant in an adult world.  This song and prose writing, musical execution, and now an exceptional video have completely blown me away.

That said... I have also taken heart at the video posted by MAC (hate that I did not get to know him, those of you who did hold him in high esteem) in Oct. of '09 of the 73 year old grandmother playing "Need your love so bad".  It has given me hope and encouragement that I may be able to play with some moderate skill if I live long enough and stick with it.  Thanks to you experts for sharing some of your knowledge with us fledglings.

Very flattered to be a part of something that you can say this about Chuck.

It's a never ending mountain we're all climbing. And at each peak we reach there's usually a nice little downslope waiting for us before we can ascend again.

I have HBL to thank for the video and for adding a whole new dimension to the ending. He has been David Gilmour and also with his suggestions and ideas a kind of George Martin on this project. Also I have to admit the song would never have happened without the lyrics, and I would need to come back in another lifetime and personality to have a chance of writing lyrics to be close to matching them. I also will admit that if I had heard the backingtrack during my searches I would almost certainly have not even thought of it as one I could use. HBL saw the potential I think with his knowledge of my playing - the coincidence of the rythmn and meter of the words of the poem fittingthe backing track was just very spooky and was the sparking point for the project.

As I think I've said elsewhere I felt there were other forces putting this together with me. So now I sit looking at quite a steep drop all round this peak and I'll need to get on down the slope soon and hope I can find another peak I can manage to climb up to. Always much more to learn. thumbsup
