Hi All!
Haven't been on in a while, have been meaning to though. I've watched this video of Clapton playing Cocaine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYS732zyYfU
I know that the intro and the solos are in E minor pentatonic, but I would like to know what licks Eric plays in the intro, which I think starts from the beginning to like a couple of minutes in or so.
If anybody could help, I'd be eternally thankful. Speaking of Cocaine, I'd like to do a E minor blues jam collab type thing with somebody sometime. A seperate thread might be a good idea!

I wasn't really clear in my OP in what time range I was searching for the licks. The good stuff is 0:00 to about 1:10 roughly. I hope this helps! I just plain forgot to put the time range in my original post.

I won't tab it.. but three suggestions:
1. play small licks, not long phrases. EC in this video plays licks with less than 12 notes with a nice amount of 1/4 and 1/8 pauses; this keeps a nice rhythm going on and a sense of freshness; you'd get struck with a phrase that last 3-4 bars..
2. the dynamic. If we look at the waveform of the improvisation we'd see an irregular line, not a reglar one; this is because EC picks some notes louder than others.. and adds a sense of power and seems to say to the audience ''hey, watch me, I'm giving
you pure shit!''.
3. EC plays in the same 'fret range' (I can't see the dots, but I guess it's around the 10th- 12th fret) but he doesn't sound 'repetitive', it's the opposite! He can find new ideas within the same notes.. the lesson is: experiment, always, with few notes but without playing the same old licks, and keep your groove going on! He has a terrible groove, and plays some cool rhuthmes..
Great intro, btw!

Hey, thanks Giant_Rick!
I think that is just as helpful as the tabs for my purposes. Though I'd still like to know what exactly he is playing, it doesn't matter as much. I played around with some short, but powerful phrases, and that seemed to do the trick. I think that intro is the most powerful blues intro I have seen from EC!
Thanks again,
Jack

Unfortynately I'm not that good at tabbing.. I just try to 'understand the way the phrase it's built' and I try to play it again.
I took a look at your web-site.. it's great! I mean, you are volunteers.. nice!
I'd like to start somethign similar here.. but my days have only 24 hours!

I get what you're saying! Understanding how it was constructed, then try and play from that view! That's very astute!
Thanks for the compliment! We really do enjoy playing around the community, I don't really mind that we do it for free, I just do it for the love of the music..
