Recording with Audacity

Alright, So I just got the Line 6 UX1 Studio Amp Modelling/Recording Software and have been fooling around with it. I like the amp types and effects and tried the recording software it came with. The software it came with is "Live 7 Lite Line 6 Edition" by Ableton and I dont like it. I downloaded audacity as I have heard good things about it despite being a free program. I recently tried recording a track on it and cannot get the sound to be loud enough for it to hear. I know it is recording cause I can hear it, just very faintly and not enough to be heard over a backing track. It is not the amp in the Pod Farm or the actual device as these are all the way up. I tried flipping through the input types and none sound right. I really want to start recording so I can post stuff up here and get tips and stuff but I just can't seem to actually get the recording part done. wall I know many people here are familiar with Audacity, so throw out any tips you may have, I'm willing to try almost anything.

Re: Recording with Audacity

At first I'd control the audio settings. If windows, double click on the speaker icon and look at the recording settings. Another problem maybe the build-in soundcard, I would disable it. I suppose you've turned the audacity recording level all way up? The Gearbox software has also some controller for recording
and volume.

Re: Recording with Audacity

I don't have the time to try all that right now, but I will when I get home.... (off to school). I know how to do everything except disable the soundcard, could you show me how?

Re: Recording with Audacity

The UX1 is a fully functional soundcard, so you can go to the XP device manager and completely disable the buiild-in soundcard. There is a menu that lets you control the devices, there you can disable them (right mouse click). No need to uninstall, just disable.

Re: Recording with Audacity

Tried it, didn't need to disable the soundcard, I just turned the recording capabilities on my computer from the built in soundcard, to the UX1. It sounds pretty good. Is it just me or is Audacity pretty grainy when it gets loud and distorted (my playing style). Anyone know of a better free program?

Re: Recording with Audacity

Hi
When you use audacity you need to set Windows sound control recording levels to max, then you should set recording levels in Audacity.
Without using Audacity and only windows sound controls , can you hear the "recorded" instrument at a normal level in PC/Laptop speaker?
I normally check and set the recording/playback levels with windows sound controls before I activate any recording SW.
There is a very good (but complex) "free" recording SW = REAPER.
You can download an unlimited 30 day test version , that does not stop working after 30 , but a "nag" windows pops up during startup and remind you that the test period has expired.
