Blues Room

Why? What? How?
Blues Room

If you started playing Blues guitar for a while and play most of the time alone in your house, maybe while listening to Blues records, you may want to hear what others think of it (to get tips to improve your playing) or just to listen to someone else who has just begun. It's not a contest, because there's no price to win, and we don't put them in any order. All we do is to listen and discuss them in the forum.

Here's a short "how to" about recording with a computer.

You can provide any piece of music of any length (from just a cool lick up to a 20 minutes jam), as long as:

  • - it's really you playing
  • - the material is not copyrighted (except by yourself, of course)
  • - you're not a professional
  • - it's music we like (Blues...)

You should provide some info (written by, instruments, key, chords, tab, thoughts, tools used, email...), a special password is not required, just usual the board login after registration. Please report any errors to me. File size max. 8 MB, format: MP3 (file extension .mp3) or wav. The file name should not contain blanks or other characters then a-z, 0-9. No special characters like ' or " or &, please!. Be sure to set the sample frequency at 44.1 kHz (CD standard), otherwise the flash mp3 player may have problems.

You may also upload jam tracks for collaborations. Files can be deleted if newer versions are uploaded.

4797 KB VikingBlues Fri, 19 Mar 2010 I've gone a bit "Jazzy". On compaining I didn't know what to do next HBL recommended a BT by Jerry Dean. The BT is stunningly good. I was surprised at what flowed from its inspiration from my Tokai. I think the mood of my playing was also affected by the recent unexpected passing away of a sister-in-law. I hope one day to do a two guitar version but I've not got the skill to do that properly yet. It took a couple of weeks to work at this but the BT is too good to do a rush job.

Groaning The Blues Final.mp3
899 KB LeftyBlues Sat, 13 Mar 2010 My Groaning The Blues collab take. This is my 12 bar section. I have left a few seconds left on each end so 12bar can trim it up as necessary, it is NOT part of my solo. I might have hit a pretty bad note towards the end, but I picked this one out of all my takes cause of the emotional bend at the 17th fret. Anyways, this is my first post here, so be gentle with me, but I'd like some constructive criticism.

Meaningless War - NDH.mp3
2458 KB HowlinWolf90 Tue, 09 Mar 2010 Here's another song we have recorded. More of a pop song than a blues song. Kinda CCR/John Mellencamp sounding I would say. Not our best effort, but we think its pretty cool. Same equipment as other songs.

This Train - NDH.mp3
3178 KB HowlinWolf90 Tue, 09 Mar 2010 Same equipment as my first song posted. This is based around a 12 bar progression in the verse. The lead singer in my band and I wrote this tune. Still kinda heavy but with a blues influence.

Hard Road Blues - NDH.mp3
3926 KB HowlinWolf90 Tue, 09 Mar 2010 This song is called "Hard Road Blues" it has kind of a heavy feel to it, but still has some blues influence. I'm playing through a MIM Fender Strat with Gold Lace Sensors into two ibanez ts9's. I'm not sure what recording equipment is used since we recorded at a guy's house. I wrote the music and lyrics.

OldManOfTheSea.mp3
6286 KB VikingBlues Sat, 20 Feb 2010 Based on HBLs When a Blind Man Cries by Avalon BT. The opening near couple of minutes are quite "musique concrete" but then so was a lot of the earlier Floyd stuff. I haven't got the HBL skill at "Gilmour"ish chops so the song part is really "Viking"ish guitar. Have used both the Tokai LC85 and the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe and had to find my way around the complexities of Samplitude software a bit more. As usual the guitar input to the PC was the Vox Tonelab ST.

4002 KB VikingBlues Sun, 14 Feb 2010 Up-tempo Shuffle in A - Tokai LC85 through Tonelab ST (but edited more for sound on Samplitude) over Pete Anderson Backing Track which was described as "Stevie Ray type". Not my usual style. Trying to stretch myself again.

A Minor Affair.mp3
3117 KB VikingBlues Sun, 14 Feb 2010 Title gives it away - a minor blues in .. erm .. A minor. Pete Anderson backing Track. Tokai LC85 lead guitar throgh Vox Tonelab ST. I was toying with the idea of a piece for MAC when I recorded this - I was certainly thinking about him and I hope something of the feelings came through. But it wouldn't be suitable as a tribute anyway - that would need to be acoustic blues, and quite likely with vocals - two constraints that ruled me out.

Pinking purple.mp3
3971 KB HalfBlindLefty Sat, 13 Feb 2010 Pinking purple, as in I'm using a bt from Deep purple's When a blind man cries. and TRIED to play some rhythm (not good yet) and fiddled some Gilmourish lead lines over the result. Still pretty raw and I have to practice. But How about my Vibratone sound ?

4100 KB Jim S Wed, 10 Feb 2010 A song of mine "A long way from home" which I felt was fitting in sound and title to MAC's journey to his next life - perhaps a long way from this world, yet he is, and always will be, so close, in fact, within our hearts, minds and souls, as long as we love and remember him and his music and his kindness and generosity to each and everyone here who had the fortune to have interacted with him in any way, or even read any of his wonderful posts, or listened to his large number of uploads in this Room, which radiated love to us and everyone he touched - physically and musically and spiritually. tears_in_heaven_with_lead2.mp3
6421 KB Jim S Sun, 07 Feb 2010 Tears in Heaven -- NO vocals - for MAC This is the same as the version below, except I removed the vocals track. And it's basically the same audio track as the video of this I have on YouTube, but I added some guitar melodic soloing over it, some attempt at the slides and ornaments usually played on this, often by a 2nd guitarist. I pretty much just improvised over the basic song and no attempt was made to duplicate the vocal melody in the solo - it was just a melody as I heard it in my head. Again, if you feel this is a danger to you Gerd, just delete it. I did sing and play this at the bedside of Mary's Grandma Murphy in hospice the day (maybe 2 days - I forget now) before she passed at age 106, at the request of the family (which is the reason I learned this song in the first place). MAC - we love you and miss you terribly, and we are all crying, and Heaven is in tears because God knows our pain, though he is joyful that he has you in Eternity with him, where hopefully one day we

tears_in_heaven-vocals2.mp3
4246 KB Jim S Sun, 07 Feb 2010 Tears in Heaven w/vocals (for MAC) - (Music and Lyrics by Eric Clapton & Will Jennings) I said I would upload an acoustic version of this song, but it wasn't to be (or isn't YET) since I'm just not adjusted enough yet to the new acoustic I got and my hands tired out with multiple takes, so my electric version(s) will have to do for now. (I don't own a Nylon string guitar). This is one WITH VOCALS (which are not great, I know, but I wanted at least one version to have the lyrics). I think because of the reason behind posting this song (MAC's passing) nobody will bother Gerd about uploading a copyrighted song (as it obviously not for commercial purposes). If you feel this is a danger to you Gerd, you don't even have to ask my permission - just delete it ASAP - I fully understand the situation you have to watch out for. I LOVE the versions Hans (HBL) uploaded, and I'm amazed that he could play that fantastically after surgery - although I shouldn't be .. that IS Hans!! Jim S
