If we don't use his lyrics and don't play it note for note it should be OK, copyright wise.
Maybe a bit on the bluesy side, or VB with some celtic ideas?

Yet such a song should be considered "world heritage" and not anymore be locked by any ©opyrights!
Thus I'm pretty sure Mr Cohen himself would agree with me!
Are lawyers and beneficiaries so heartless that they couldn't understand such a cover would simply be an "homage"
and certainly not an attempt at making some $$$ !?

Anyway, if it's quite easy to not play the song note for note (chords sequence is quite common
and widely used...), changing lyrics "should" be considered a crime! Just my opinion though.

A good compromise might be to play 'around' the melody rather than to sing... My cello could certainly
give a "quite good equivalence" to Leonard's mellow voice?

Waiting for VB 'celtic ideas'... and why not yours...

Music is business, and business is about money. There are laws (some of them hard to understand, but still valid), and in Internet times a simple wrong link or a tribute with too many notes from the original can be enough to be accused. I've mentioned this before: I've already learned it the hard way, it was a costly affair, although I was right, but paying lawyers is money, too. I had a really hard time and I don't want it back.

A real copyright trial could easily destroy my existence, and that of my family, too. This is the reason I care so much about copyrights to keep the risk low.

Hope those business men get enough money to build a brand new highway to Hell, someday!

Giving up on this cover idea, I do prefer try to catch all the music floating in the air and cultivate vegetables trees and flowers in my garden :D Too :oldie: to fight this material world again and again...

Later,

His life will live for many generations through his music. It's sad that he has passed but we should rejoice that he left the world with such a gift!
