Humbucker vs P90 vs Single Coil pickup

Post by Kalle »

Hi Guys
I have done a primitive/fast comparison of the sound from my guitars:
Yamaha RGX 320 with Tonerider Alnico 4 humbucker pickups
AXL MJZ with P90 pickups
Squire Stratocaster with Fender American Standard single coil pickups

The amp KLD 30 ( Peavey 30 clone) is set in clean mode with a bit reverb.
Recording is done with my Zoom H4 1/2 meter in front of a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker.
The neck pickup test is made with chord playing (T-Bone Walker style).
The bridge pickup test is done with a very primitive (and bad) lead playing.

Yamaha RBX 270 bass guitar with Laney DB150 amp.
Yamaha RGX 320 electric guitar with Egnator Tweaker tube amp.

Interesting...
The P90 has a more vintage sound, compared to the hums or Fender types, I think.

I like those sounds you're getting from the P90s. A good P90 seems to get the best of both worlds .. single coil with a touch of humbucker.

Do you know what type of Alnico is in the P90s?

Hi VB
No, I don't know what type of Alnico that is used in the P90 pickups.
Only information is that they are "overwound"i.e. hot.
"AXL says that they are some of the hottest pickups that they put on their guitars".
