They are finding out chords fairly correctly, but often they are "fooled" by the bassline and put in more chords than the song has.

+1! As usual I've eventually smth to say, indeed! Maybe a good idea to play different parts on different guitars... Different soundings often means different feelings and might help the lead guitar to come up like a second voice (contre-chant)... Just an idea though ;-) Don't blame yourself that muc...
